TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu Jakarta) is investigating a support letter from President Prabowo Subianto for the Jakarta gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidate pair, Ridwan Kamil and Suswono. The letter, which circulated on social media on November 25, 2024, was issued during the silent period, which commenced on November 24, 2024.
Benny Sabdo, Coordinator of the Violations Handling Division of Bawaslu Jakarta, urged all parties to uphold the integrity of the Jakarta gubernatorial election. “We will verify the authenticity of the letter. In principle, campaigning in any form is strictly prohibited during the silent period,” he said in a statement on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
The three-paragraph letter, signed by Prabowo himself, praises the candidate pair and encourages voters to support them. However, the exact date of the letter's creation remains unclear.
Gerindra Party Daily Chair Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed the authenticity of the letter. “I have checked it. The letter was indeed issued by Pak Prabowo in his capacity as the Chair and Chair of the Board of Trustees of Gerindra Party, which supports the Ridwan Kamil and Suswono pair,” he said in Jakarta on Monday, November 25, 2024.
Ahmad Muzani, Secretary-General of the Gerindra Party, clarified that Prabowo's position in the letter is solely as a party official. “The letter is clear, stating his position as the party’s Chair and Chair of the Board of Trustees,” Muzani said on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
According to him, the letter was drafted during the campaign period and only gained widespread attention during the silent period.
Chico Hakim, spokesperson for the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and supporter of the Pramono Anung-Rano Karno pair, expressed concerns that Prabowo’s support could compromise the neutrality of government officials. He noted that the Pramono-Rano pair did not anticipate such support from the President, given the importance of official neutrality.
