TEMPO.CO, JakartaJeff Bezos, one of the billionaires from the United States (US), confirmed that he would donate US$1 million (Rp16 billion) for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump and broadcast the event. Bezos' donation is considered by many to be a peace offering from the billionaire.

Bezos is the owner of the largest online shopping platform in the United States, Amazon, and the owner of the Washington Post newspaper since 2013. Bezos was previously one of the people who most criticized Trump when he served as the first president of the United States.

"Bezos donated on behalf of Amazon," a source told the Wall Street Journal, Thursday, December 14, 2024. Shortly thereafter, Amazon confirmed this news via CNN.

In addition to donating directly to Trump's inauguration, Amazon's Prime Video will broadcast the event live, which is considered another donation worth US$1 million (Rp16 billion). Bezos is also likely to meet Trump at his private home in Mar-a-Lago in Florida next week.

Bezos' net worth is estimated at around USD250 billion (Rp4,008 trillion) so the amount of Rp16 billion in donations is considered symbolic. Bezos is considered to have started to turn around, from previously supporting the Democratic Party earlier this year, to praising Trump after the assassination attempt on Trump while he was campaigning on July 13, 2024 in Pennsylvania.

In October 2024, Bezos vetoed the Washington Post's support for Kamala Harris' candidacy in the US presidential election, causing concern among Washington Post staff and customers. Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Washington Post reported that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerburg would donate USD1 million (Rp16 billion) to Trump's inauguration event. At the end of last month, Zuckerberg had visited Trump's house, even having dinner together.

Bezos and Zuckerberg's move was seen as a ransom after the two billionaires gave more than US$400 million (Rp6 trillion) to the Democratic Party and several institutions that are mostly held by Democratic politicians, who then banned Trump from using Facebook and Instagram after the riots at the US Capitol building on January 6.
