TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eleven people died in a fire in a cafe in Hanoi on Wednesday night, and police have arrested a man suspected of starting the blaze, said the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam on Thursday, December 19, 2024, as reported by Reuters.
Police said in a statement that the man had confessed to using gasoline to light a fire on the ground floor of the three-story cafe after having an argument with the staff.
As reported by VietnamNews, C.V.H., 51 years old, residing in Dai Mach commune, Dong Anh district, was accused of murder. The suspect has two previous convictions for robbery and theft.
At the police station, C.V.H. initially confessed that after drinking beer at the cafe, he got into an argument with the staff. He then purchased gasoline, poured it on the first floor of the cafe, where several motorcycles were parked, and set it on fire.
After seeing the fires spread, he immediately fled the scene.
Seven people were successfully rescued from the fire, two of whom were hospitalized, said the police statement.
Nguyen Hai Trung, the director of the city police, has ordered the Hanoi city police investigation agency to launch an investigation and clarify the crime's motives. Authorities also verify the identities of the victims.
