TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency over bird flu Wednesday after cases of the virus were detected in dairy cows at a farm in the southern U.S. state, NBC San Diego reported Thursday, December 19, 2024.
"Governor Gavin Newsom today declared a State of Emergency to streamline and expedite the state's response to Avian Influenza A (H5N1), commonly known as 'Bird Flu,'" the governor's office said in a statement.
"This declaration is a targeted action to ensure state agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak," the statement said. "While the risk to the public remains low, we will continue to take all necessary steps to prevent the spread of this virus."
So far, 34 Californians have been infected with the virus — and all but one have been linked to livestock. The source of the latest case is still under investigation.
There have been 61 human cases reported nationwide.
The latest cases in dairy cattle highlight the need to expand surveillance and strengthen a coordinated approach across the state to contain the virus, the statement said.
Cases of bird flu have spread to as many as 16 states in dairy cattle, with the first cases confirmed in Texas and Kansas in March, Newsom’s office said.
However, there has been no reported person-to-person transmission of bird flu detected in California, the statement added.
Earlier in the day, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the first severe human illness caused by bird flu in the country.
The case was confirmed in a person in the state of Louisiana who had been exposed to sick and dead poultry in his backyard flock.
