TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Deputy Minister of Public Works, Diana Kusumastuti, said the construction progress of the State Mosque in the new capital city, Nusantara Capital City (IKN), has reached 45 percent completion.
Diana requested the project’s development to be accelerated, concluding the topping off process within this month.
"I’ve requested that the (State Mosque) be finished by March 2025, entering Ramadan, so it can be used for Eid al Fitr,” said Diana on Sunday, December 1, 2024, as quoted from a written statement.
The IKN State Mosque, which former President Jokowi did the groundbreaking on January 18 this year, is being built on a land area of 32,125 square meters, with a building area of 61,596 square meters. In addition, a commercial building with two floors covers an area of 2,212 square meters, and support buildings cover an area of 727 square meters.
The East Kalimantan Regional Infrastructure Development Agency (BPPW) is responsible for developing the state mosque. The implementing contractor is PT Adhi Karya—PT Hutama Karya through a joint operation. Contractually, the IKN State Mosque construction will take 400 working days starting in November 2023.
Diana explained that the IKN State Mosque comprises three parts: the main dome, an open plaza, and the minaret. "The mosque dome adopts the concept of a turban symbol and the formation of the Andromeda galaxy illustrating the infinity of the universe," she explained.
Meanwhile, the open plaza provides a clear direction to the qibla axis, leading towards the towering minaret. The minaret’s dynamic shape brings the swirl of the universe spiraling upwards towards divinity.
During the groundbreaking, Indonesia’s 7th President Jokowi mentioned that the construction value of the IKN State Mosque reached Rp940 billion. In terms of capacity, Jokowi said the mosque can accommodate 61,000 people.
"Indeed, this mosque will be enormous,” said Jokowi earlier this year in IKN, quoted from a live broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
At that time, Jokowi said the IKN State Mosque would be equipped with area infrastructure, such as roads and bridges. The former Governor of Jakarta also mentioned that the construction of places of worship at IKN will not stop at mosques. He indicated that there would be constructions for churches, monasteries, puras (Balinese Hindu temples), and pagodas.
“This will show how diverse we are, and we must continue to maintain harmony to strengthen unity in our country,” Jokowi said while conducting the groundbreaking of the IKN State Mosque.
