TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, received a visit from Chinese Vice President Han Zheng at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Saturday, October 19, at around 7 p.m. Jakarta time. The meeting was private.
Tempo has yet to confirm the content of the discussions between Zheng and Jokowi. State Secretary Minister Pratikno and Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhur Binsar Pandjaitan accompanied Jokowi. Zheng arrived at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Saturday at 5 p.m.
The representative of President Xi Jinping will attend the inauguration of President and Vice President Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi's son, in Senayan on Sunday.
China is one of Indonesia's most important trading partners. The total trade value between Indonesia and China amounted to US$127.8 billion in 2023. In the same year, China was also the second largest investor after Singapore, with an investment value of US$7.4 billion.
Earlier, President Jokowi reportedly discussed Indonesia-China relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping over the phone during the 10 years of his presidency, according to Chinese state media on Monday, October 14, 2024.
Jokowi has visited China eight times and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping 12 times.
Xi said Jokowi has led the two countries into a new era of bilateral cooperation. China, Xi continued, is willing to work with Indonesia on the Belt and Road Initiative and continue cooperation on the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway and other partnerships.
"I believe the new Indonesian government will inherit the friendly policy toward China and push for the realization of a China-Indonesia community of shared future at a higher level," Xi said, as quoted by Antara.
