TEMPO.CO, Bandung - Geological Body of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has lowered the eruption danger radius of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki to a 7-kilometer radius from the eruption center at the summit of the mountain.

Previously, the danger radius was also set at 9 kilometers in the southwest-northwest sector. Nevertheless, the activity status of Mount Lewotobi Male is still maintained at Level IV or Alert status.

"Residents around Mount Lewotobi Male and visitors/tourists are not allowed to carry out any activities within the 7-kilometer radius from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki ," said the Head of the Geological Body, Muhammad Wafid, in his statement on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, in the evening.

The change in recommendation is effective starting Tuesday at 15:00 WITA (Central Indonesian Time). In addition to the eruption danger, the Geological Body also asks residents to remain cautious of potential volcanic mudflows.

"Residents around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki should be cautious of rain-induced volcanic mudflows in rivers originating from the summit of Mount Lewotobi Male in case of heavy rainfall, especially in the Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Klatanlo, Hokengjaya, Boru, Nawakote areas," said Wafid.

Residents are also advised to continue using masks or nose and mouth covers to avoid the dangers of volcanic ash on the respiratory system.

Wafid stated that the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki during the period from November 16 to 25, 2024, had relatively decreased. "The eruption during this period has decreased, but there are still moderate to strong eruptions accompanied by roaring sounds," he said.

A report from the Geological Body mentioned that the height of the eruption column had also relatively decreased to an average of 500-2,000 meters above the summit. Previously, the eruptions of Mount Lewotobi Male averaged 1,000-3,000 meters above the summit.

Observations of deep volcanic earthquakes and shallow volcanic earthquakes still recorded a relatively decreased number. "Deep and shallow volcanic earthquakes are still recorded but with a slightly decreased number compared to the previous period. This indicates that there is still magma supply from the depths to shallower depths," said Wafid.

Wafid mentioned that the lava flow resulting from the eruption of Mount Lewotobi is still monitored. "Lava flow is still occurring with a stable sliding distance of 3.8 kilometers in the northwest direction and around 2 kilometers in the northeast direction, however, an increase in this distance is still possible given the slope inclination and high lava temperature," he said.

The Geological Body noted a relative reduction in local tectonic and distant tectonic earthquakes. "Local tectonic earthquakes around Mount Lewotobi Male are one of the indicators of Mount Lewotobi Male's activity, so it needs to be watched out for if there is a sudden increase in the number of local tectonic earthquakes that will affect the height of the eruption or the activity of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki," said Wafid.
