Erick Thohir Says Prabowo Wants to Increase Indonesian Football Funding to Be More Than Rp200 Billion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chair of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir wrote to Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati about the allocation of funding to support the development of local football.

"Hopefully this will help our long-term program for 2025," said Erick Thohir at Bali United Training Center Pantai Purnama, Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency, Bali, on Saturday.

The Minister of State-Owned Enterprises admitted that he had been summoned by President Prabowo Subianto regarding the budget needs to support Indonesian football.

The Chair of PSSI conveyed the commitment of the Head of State to increase the State Budget allocation from the previous Rp120 billion to be more than Rp200 billion.

"Indeed, I was recently summoned by President Prabowo. The President has committed to an even larger figure. If last year's State Budget allocation was Rp120 billion, he said, 'I can help you with Rp200 billion and above,' " said Erick.

Nevertheless, the Chair of PSSI stated that they cannot expect 100 percent of the budget to come from the State Budget due to budget priorities.

The funding needs are used for long-term programs including Asian Cup qualifications and also towards the World Cup and the development of local football.

Therefore, they are opening up wide cooperation with private parties to support the funding needs in developing local football.

Currently, they have partnered with 19 private sponsors supporting the Indonesian national team.

"We also don't want 100 percent of PSSI's funding to come from the government. That's why brands like Oppo Indonesia can support. Many brands also support the national team," he said after receiving support from the smartphone device brand.

Aside from support from the government and private parties as sponsors, the Chairman of PSSI emphasized the need for support from the community, including support through purchasing match tickets.

He hopes that support from the government, private sector, and the community will motivate the Indonesian national team to achieve a historic feat, being the first in history where three age categories of the Indonesian National Team compete on the world stage.

"This is the first time in history, the U-17, U-20, and Senior National Teams are in the Asian Cup, and our U23 team almost made it to the Olympics. The U-17, U-20, and senior teams are currently fighting to qualify for the World Cup," said Erick Thohir.
