TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The European Union (EU) Delegation to Indonesia launched the “Working Together Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign as part of the "16 Days of Global Campaign Against Violence Against Women" which is held annually from November 25 to December 10.

The European Union calls gender-based violence a global issue that impacts women in various countries and regions around the world. The European Union has made eradicating gender-based violence a top priority and considers the issue a violation of human dignity that impacts society globally.

In the official release of the European Union, gender-based violence is categorized as a complex problem that requires a multifaceted approach. The organization emphasized the importance of working together with partners in addressing the gender issue.

The European Union offers a collaborative approach that allows for the realization of more comprehensive strategies, ranging from legal reform and public awareness campaigns to supporting service facilities for survivors of gender-based violence. The European Union assesses that this cooperation will create a world where everyone, especially women, can live free from the threat of violence.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost 1 in 3 or 30 percent of women aged 15 and over have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a partner or sexual violence by a non-partner, at least once in their lives. In other words, it is estimated that around 736 million women worldwide have experienced gender-based violence.

This EU campaign is in line with the priorities of the Indonesian government, which is equally aware of the urgent need to address this widespread issue.

The EU highlights the Indonesian government which has combated gender-based violence, including through the ratification of the Sexual Violence Crime Law (UU TPKS) in 2022 which provides legal protection for victims of online sexual violence.

Furthermore, the EU has prioritized this issue through initiatives such as the Gender Equality Strategy for 2020-2025. In 2024, the European Union also adopted the first regulation on combating violence against women and domestic violence that criminalizes certain forms of violence against women.

"The EU and Indonesia see the importance of a comprehensive approach, including legal reform, public awareness campaigns, and support services for survivors," the statement said.

The EU has a mission to create a sustainable impact that helps realize a gender-equal society with the hope of increasing shared growth in Indonesia.

The EU Delegation to Indonesia also supports the annual awards (WEPs) Awards by UN Women to recognize companies that have implemented policies that promote gender equality and strengthen the rights of women workers.

Not only that, the EU Delegation to Indonesia also provides a platform for members of the Youth Sounding Board or Friends of the European Union (YSB) as a forum for their ideas on efforts to eradicate online gender-based violence.

This year’s campaign concludes with a “Friendly Football Match and Sports Festival” at Pancoran Soccer Field (PSF), Jakarta on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
