TEMPO.CO, Batam - The number of foreign tourist visits to Batam City, Riau Islands Province, increased by 8 percent, the Central Statistics Agency, or BPS, reported on Friday, January 3, 2025.
The increase was recorded in the January-November period. BPS recorded 1,043,078 visits in January-November 2023, and 1,166,849 visits in January-November 2024.
"This means there was an increase of 8.23 percent from 2023 to 2024," said Eko Aprianto, the head of BPS Batam City, in the press release.
Similarly, the number of foreign tourist visits in November reached 112,641, higher than the previous month at 110,677 visits. "Meanwhile, based on nationality, the majority of foreign tourists came from Singapore, followed by Malaysia, China, India and the Philippines," Eko said.
Some 58,917 tourists from Singapore, 24,375 from Malaysia, 3,913 from China, 3,092 from India, and 1,897 tourists from the Philippines. "The foreign visit in Batam City in November 2024 was dominated by tourists from Singapore, accounting for 52.31 percent of the total number of foreign tourists in November 2024," Eko added.
Hotel Room Occupancy Rate Increases
In addition to the number of foreign tourist visits, the BPS Batam also stated that the room occupancy rate of starred hotels in Riau Islands Province in November 2024, increased by 2.32 points or 57.98 percent compared to October 2024 at 55.66 percent.
The average length of stay of foreign and Indonesian guests at starred hotels in Riau Islands Province in November 2024 was recorded at 1.86 days or decreased by 0.01 points compared to October 2024.
Apart from being known as an industrial city, Batam City has also been touted as a tourist city in recent years. Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, tourist visits to Batam ranked second in Indonesia.
