TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Georgian lawmakers have elected former Manchester City footballer Mikhail Kavelashvili as the country’s new president. Kavelashvili’s party is the country’s ruling party.
Kavelashvili won the support of 224 out of 300 lawmakers. Kavelashvili, 53, is the only candidate considered by Georgian lawmakers for the important post.
Georgia is a parliamentary republic, where the prime minister and the government hold executive power. The presidency is a ceremonial position.
Groups opposed to Georgia joining the European Union have been protesting since the Georgian People’s Dream party narrowly lost parliamentary elections in October 2024. The group opposes recognizing the parliamentary vote that made Kavelashvili the president of Georgia. As a result, demonstrators carrying Georgian and EU flags gathered in the center of the capital, chanting ‘Salome! Salome!’, the name of Georgia’s ousted president Salome Zourabichvili.
Zourabichvili said in an interview with Radio France Internationale earlier this week that she has no intention of leaving the presidential palace even though her term ends on Monday, December 16, 2024. "If the new president is legitimately elected through elections, I will gladly hand over my seat to him," Zourabichvili said.
In the history of the Georgian presidency, this is the first time that a president has been elected by members of parliament through a majority vote. Kavelashvili was previously a member of parliament for the Georgian People's Dream Party, but he joined the newly founded People's Party in the summer of 2022. The party now has eight seats in parliament and is part of Georgia's ruling coalition.
Before becoming a politician, Kavelashvili was a successful footballer. He played for Manchester City, Dinamo Tbilisi, Spartak Vladikavkaz and several football clubs in Switzerland, including Grasshoppers and Basel. He is recorded as having scored 166 goals.
