TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) has officially launched a new digital payment method, the Quick Response Code Indonesian or QRIS Tap. With this latest QRIS innovation, users no longer need to scan QR codes when making transactions. "We hope that with this launch, we can further encourage digitalization in transportation, making it more acceptable and widespread in society," said BI's Head of Payment System Policy Department Dicky Kartikoyono during a press conference at the BI Building in Jakarta on Thursday, March 14, 2025. So, how do you use QRIS Tap?

How to Use QRIS Tap

The steps to using QRIS Tap are as follows:

  • Enable the Near Field Communication (NFC) feature.
  • Open a QRIS Tap-compatible payment application, such as a mobile banking app or digital wallet (e-wallet). Ensure the application has been updated to the latest version to ensure compatibility and transaction security.
  • Select the QRIS Tap menu.
  • Enter the security code or PIN to confirm identity.
  • Place your smartphone equipped with NFC technology in the payment terminal provided by the retail store.
  • If the transaction is completed successfully, the user will receive a notification on the phone screen that the transaction was successful.

How QRIS Tap Works

It should be noted that operating the QRIS Tap requires NFC technology on the smartphone. With this new system, users only need to touch the phone to the reader without scanning a QR code, making it relatively faster. "This QRIS without scanning is 0.3 seconds faster than conventional QRIS," said BI's Head of Payment System Policy Department Dicky Kartikoyono.

He stated that QRIS Tap is part of the economic digitalization development program to improve productivity. "Because there was faster velocity, then the community can be more optimal in utilizing their funds," said Dicky.

He explained that in the initial stage, QRIS Tap works only on Android smartphones and on flat rates public transportation systems. The list of transportation modes that have implemented QRIS Tap includes:

  • Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) - Lebak Bulus.
  • 120 fleets of Perusahaan Umum Djawatan Angkoetan Motor Repoeblik Indonesia (Perum Damri) in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) Resident Connection.
  • 12 RoyalTrans units.
  • Trans Metro Pasundan Bandung.
  • Trans Sarbagita Bali.

Furthermore, QRIS Tap is also available in other sectors, including 2,353 outlets consisting of retail, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), parking, and hospitals, such as Tarakan Regional General Hospital (RSUD), Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) Kencana, and Gatot Subroto Army Central Hospital (RSPAD).

Shortly, according to BI, QRIS Tap will be expanded to all MRT stations, Light Rapid Transit (LRT) systems, TransJakarta, Commuter Line trains in Jabodetabek, Yogyakarta-Solo trains, Damri, and the Teman Bus system across cities in Indonesia.
