TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several severe hydrometeorological disasters struck various regions in North Sumatra last week, culminating in a tragic toll of 20 lives as of Sunday, November 24, 2024.
As of Tuesday, November 26, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported the following breakdown of fatalities: 10 in Karo Regency, 4 in Deli Serdang, 4 in Padang Lawas, and 2 in South Tapanuli. Additionally, two residents in Deli Serdang remain missing and are being sought by search and rescue teams.
The devastating incidents were triggered by heavy rainfall. “Flash floods hit South Tapanuli and Deli Serdang, and landslides wreaked havoc in Padang Lawas and Karo on Saturday, November 23,” said Abdul Muhari, Head of Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management at BNPB, in a written statement on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
Initial data indicate that six houses were severely damaged, primarily due to flash floods in Deli Serdang and landslides in Karo. “Public facilities, including schools and places of worship, also suffered damage,” Muhari added. Regional Disaster Mitigation Agencies (BPBD) in the affected areas are currently evaluating the full extent of the losses.
BNPB has issued a strong warning to local governments and residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential secondary hazards. “Today's weather forecast predicts heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and strong winds, in the regions of Deli Serdang, Karo, Langkat, Padang Lawas, South Tapanuli, and Binjai City,” Muhari cautioned.
