TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of residents were reported to be affected by the tidal flooding disaster in Indramayu Regency, West Java. The National Disaster Management Agency or BNPB records this disaster inundating the areas of Kandanghaur and Cantigi Subdistricts. Consequently, more than 100 hectares of agricultural land and residential areas have been damaged.
BNPB data as of Wednesday, December 18, 2024, states that the tidal flooding has seeped into the productive lands of the local community. Moreover, one of the embankments in the Bendo River, which serves as a drainage outlet, is no longer functional due to a breach.
The Head of the Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, states that tidal flooding is caused by rising sea levels. This disaster has occurred since the early hours of Friday, December 13, 2024, in Indramayu.
A total of 4,354 households (KK) have been affected by this disaster, with details of 2,854 households in the Kandanghaur Subdistrict and 1,500 in the Cantigi Subdistrict. "There are no reports of casualties," said Abdul in his official statement, Wednesday afternoon, December 18, 2024.
Abdul stated that the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Indramayu Regency, along with the Food Security Agency, has distributed logistical aid such as instant noodles, mineral water, biscuits, rice, and other necessities to assist the affected community.
The Indramayu Regency Government has also declared a disaster emergency alert status to address this hydrometeorological disaster effective from November 25, 2024, until May 31, 2025. "Considering the continuously changing weather, the BPBD of Indramayu Regency continues to collaborate with related agencies to monitor and manage the impact of this disaster," said Abdul.
Regarding the current condition, Abdul mentioned that on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, the sea water had started to recede in the evening. However, this morning, the sea level rise recurred. He urged the BPBD of Indramayu Regency to keep monitoring the situation developments to execute further handling, while ensuring that the recovery for the affected community proceeds smoothly.
