Israel Appeals Against ICC Arrest Warrant for Netanyahu and Gallant

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel filed an appeal on Sunday against the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

The statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said that the appeal "detailed how unreasonable the issuance of the arrest warrants is and how it lacks any factual or legal basis."

The statement added that if the ICC rejects the appeal, it will only "underscore to Israel's friends in the US and the world how biased the International Criminal Court is against Israel," as reported by Anadolu.

Last month, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant on war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel consistently challenges the court's jurisdiction, as it is not an ICC member state.

As reported by The Times of Israel, the ICC rejected Israel's claim that the court should have provided notice about its investigation into the conduct of the war. However, the ICC stated that Israel could appeal the court's jurisdiction over its decision to issue the arrest warrants.

Israel has waged a genocidal war in the Gaza Strip that has claimed nearly 45,000 victims, mostly women and children, since an attack by the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, on October 7, 2023.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its war in Gaza.
