TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar claimed on Monday, November 11, 2024, that the establishment of a Palestinian state is not a realistic goal amid the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.
"I don't think this position is realistic today, and we must be realistic," said the newly appointed minister when asked about the formation of a Palestinian state in exchange for the normalization of ties between Israel and Arab countries.
The State of Palestine would become a "Hamas state," claimed Saar, referring to the Palestinian resistance group in Gaza that has been fighting Israel in increased hostilities over the past year.
This normalization effort is part of the 2020 Abraham Accords overseen by Donald Trump. The process can be resumed once he returns to the White House following his recent electoral victory.
As the Israeli minister spoke in Jerusalem, Arab and Muslim leaders gathered in Saudi Arabia for a summit to discuss the wars in Gaza and Lebanon, where Israel is also fighting against Hezbollah.
A draft resolution at the summit stressed "firm support" for "national rights" for the Palestinian people, "foremost among which is their right to freedom and to an independent, sovereign state."
The ongoing war in Gaza has killed over 43,603 Palestinians since its increased intensity on October 7, according to data from the region's health ministry. Meanwhile, regular cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in Lebanon escalated at the end of September when Israel intensified airstrikes and sent ground troops into southern Lebanon.
