TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Italy on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, said there are 'many doubts' about the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Italy's Foreign Minister stated that it is impossible to arrest Netanyahu as long as he leads the government.
Italy, currently leading the Group of Seven (G7) nations, hosted a meeting of foreign ministers.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who sought to establish a common G7 position on the matter, said Rome has many doubts about the legality of the mandate and clarification is needed on whether senior state officials are immune from such arrests.
Italy has requested discussions on the ICC arrest warrant within the G7 on Tuesday, following a rift in Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government over its impact on Netanyahu.
"We found a common position that we requested," Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said at a press conference after the talks. Tajani stated there are 'many legal doubts' about the warrant and said 'we need to understand the rules.'
"Can a head of state be arrested? Who would arrest him?" he asked. "Netanyahu will never go to a country where he can be arrested," he added.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said Rome must fulfill its obligations and arrest Netanyahu if he comes to Italy. Meanwhile, Matteo Salvini - leader of the Liga party also in the governing coalition - said the Israeli leader would be welcomed in the country.
A diplomatic source said discussions in Fiuggi were 'much broader and more strategic' than what was reflected in the final statement, without revealing specifics.
The Israeli Genocide in Gaza has been ongoing since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in 1,139 deaths according to Al Jazeera.
Israel's retaliatory attacks have killed at least 44,249 people in Gaza, the majority of whom are civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in the area recognized by the UN.
