TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 in Liloan, Panaon Island, Philippines, Thursday, January 23, 2025.

BMKG’s earthquake and tsunami director Daryono said the earthquake occurred at 6:39 a.m. local time.

“Preliminary reports show that the earthquake resulted in 18 damaged houses,” Daryono said in a written statement.

Daryono said ground reports found fractures in the ground and rockslides down the hill due to the tremors. No reports of casualties or injuries, however.

The epicenter of the earthquake, said Daryono, was located at coordinates 10.10° North latitude and 125.20° East longitude. The epicenter was on land at a distance of about 7 kilometers north of Liloan City, at a 9-kilometer depth.

“The tremor was categorized as shallow crustal earthquake triggered by active fault activity on the mainland of Panaon Island,” said Daryono.

BMKG analysis results show that this tectonic earthquake had an oblique thrust mechanism. Daryono confirmed that the earthquake did not cause any tsunami scare.
