TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malaysian government has accepted the repatriation of two of its citizens who were detained at Guantanamo Detention Camp, Cuba, since 2006. They were detained for their involvement in the bombing that killed 202 people in Bali in 2002.
Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, in a statement obtained by Antara in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, said the Malaysian Civil Union Government based on the principle of human rights and support for universal justice, has accepted two Malaysian citizens.
The two Malaysians are Mohammed Farik bin Amin and Mohammed Nazir bin Lep, who the United States Government handed over after being detained in 2006 at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp, Cuba.
He said he has prepared a comprehensive reintegration program for the two individuals involved, including support services, welfare and health checks.
“The Civil Government will ensure their welfare is well maintained through a comprehensive integration program including health screening,” Saifuddin said.
Mohammed Farik bin Amin and Mohammed Nazir bin Lep, Malaysian citizens, along with Encep Nurjaman or Hambali, an Indonesian citizen, were arrested in Thailand in 2003. They were then detained in the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) detention center, and three years later taken to Guantanamo.
Previously in 2021, US Military Prosecutors had filed formal charges against the three alleged perpetrators in connection with the 2002 Bali bombings and the 2003 Jakarta bombings.
The charges were only filed after the three were arrested in 2003 in Thailand and detained in Guantanamo since 2006.
In January 2024, at a trial at the Military Court at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the two Malaysians pleaded guilty to conspiracy to carry out the Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including seven US citizens, in October 2002.
However, both pleaded not guilty to charges related to the bombing case at the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta in 2003.
