TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, that Israel is prepared to implement the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon. However, he emphasized that Israel would “respond forcefully to any violation” by Hezbollah.

In a televised address reported by Al Arabiya, Netanyahu said he would present the ceasefire agreement to his cabinet later that evening. Israeli television reported that the security cabinet had already approved the deal.

The ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah is set to take effect on Wednesday. Channel 12 reported that the Israeli security cabinet had convened to discuss the terms of the agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, Israeli forces will withdraw from southern Lebanon, and the Lebanese army will deploy in the area. Hezbollah has committed to ending its armed presence along the southern border of the Litani River.

Israel and Hezbollah officially agreed to a ceasefire that went into effect on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. The ceasefire, brokered by the United States and France with Iranian support, was announced by US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. This agreement marks the end of a year-long conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border, which has claimed thousands of lives.

Reuters reported that U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with both Netanyahu and interim Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The ceasefire is scheduled to begin at 4 a.m. local time.

“This is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. What is left of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed to threaten the security of Israel again,” Biden said.

Biden added that Israel will gradually withdraw its troops over a 60-day period as the Lebanese army assumes control of the border area. This measure aims to prevent Hizbullah from rebuilding its infrastructure in the region. “Civilians on both sides will soon be able to safely return to their communities,” Biden added.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his approval of the agreement on social media platform X, acknowledging the months of effort by Israeli and Lebanese authorities, in close cooperation with the United States.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib stated that the Lebanese army is prepared to deploy at least 5,000 soldiers to southern Lebanon as Israeli forces withdraw. The United States may play a role in rebuilding infrastructure damaged by Israeli attacks.

Prior to the ceasefire announcement, Israeli attacks intensified, targeting densely populated areas in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah. The Israeli military reported striking 20 targets in the city within 120 seconds, resulting in at least seven deaths and 37 injuries, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

Over the past year, more than 3,750 people have been killed in Lebanon, and over a million people have been displaced, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The casualties include both civilians and combatants.
