TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of patients in Canada who choose euthanasia has increased, affecting the country's mortality rate. The number of patients seeking euthanasia has increased from one person to 20 people and continues to grow last year.

According to a report by Health Canada, the agency that assists medically in euthanasia (MAID), in 2023 the number of patients who are euthanized will be 15,343 people, the highest in Canadian history. This figure represents an increase of 15.8 percent compared to 2022. The report, published on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, also revealed that the number of people who registered for euthanasia has decreased by 31 percent annually.

Although the number of people registering for euthanasia has decreased, many Canadians have admitted that they choose the option of ending their lives based on Canadian national law.

"It is still unclear whether these findings reflect a long-term stabilization of growth rates," said the MAID report.

Meanwhile, Canadian central government statistics show that the number of people requesting assistance to end their lives in 2023 was 4.7 percent and 4.1 percent the previous year. More than 95 percent of euthanasia cases are carried out by patients with chronic diseases in the final stages. Most of those who request euthanasia are cancer patients. Meanwhile, based on age, the average age of those requesting euthanasia is over 77 years old.

"The spread of information about MAID, the elderly population, chronic diseases, personal beliefs and community acceptance, the availability of practitioners who will perform euthanasia - all of these are factors that influence the average provision rate," said the MAID report.

Medical assistance to end life in Canada is a legal act for people with certain health conditions. However, it was reported that patients with Alzheimer's and dementia can apply for euthanasia before the impact of the disease worsens. In February 2024, Canada postponed a controversial plan to allow euthanasia for patients with mental illness until at least 2027 to give the country's health services time to prepare this plan properly. This is because there are a number of medical professionals who have expressed concerns that there are medical personnel who are not properly trained to determine whether a person's mental illness is sufficient to qualify for euthanasia.
