TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-sisi. The meeting was held at the Al Ittihadiya Presidential Palace, Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

"This is an honor for me to carry out the first state visit by a President of the Republic of Indonesia in the last 10 years," said President Prabowo in a release received on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

The Head of State also emphasized the importance of Egypt in Indonesia's historical and diplomatic relations. President Prabowo explained that Egypt was the first country to recognize Indonesia's independence.

"Egypt has a special place in our hearts for the Indonesian people because Egypt was the first country to recognize the independence of the Indonesian people when we fought the war of independence against the colonialists," said Prabowo.

The meeting between the two leaders focused on increasing cooperation in various fields. One of them, Indonesia is encouraging the formation of a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) to strengthen trade relations between the two countries.

Prabowo also highlighted cultural cooperation, including the promotion of pencak silat which is increasingly popular with the young generation of Egypt. "I have received reports that around 4 thousand young Egyptians are learning pencak silat," said Prabowo.

On regional issues, especially Palestine, the two leaders agreed to continue supporting the Palestinian struggle for independence and the two-state solution. Prabowo also praised Egypt's strategic role as a peace mediator and humanitarian aid hub for Gaza.

"We will work together with Egypt to find an urgent peace solution for Palestine and the region. And of course we support Palestinian independence and the two-state solution," said Prabowo.

The two countries, which have a majority Muslim population, also emphasized their shared commitment to promoting moderate Islam that is tolerant and inclusive. This is important as an effort to combat extremism and Islamophobia.

"Our Islam, our similarity is moderate Islam. And we must maintain this and promote this, so that we can also combat extremism and Islamophobia," said Prabowo.

Meanwhile, President El-Sisi expressed his commitment to increasing cooperation between Indonesia and Egypt in various fields. In fact, the Egyptian government will fully support Indonesian students studying in Egypt.

"We are ready to support and provide facilities as desired by Indonesia," said President El-Sisi.

Meanwhile, Prabowo Subianto is currently in Cairo, Egypt. He intends to hold a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and attend the D-8 Summit on 17–19 December 2024.
