TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto visited the Fisheries’ Aquaculture Production Business Service Center (BLUPPB) area, Karawang Regency, West Java Province, on Monday morning, December 2, 2024.
The president inspected the cultivation process of saline tilapia fish through an observation tower, the Presidential Secretariat said in a written statement.
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono explained through a display panel the potential and productivity of the fish cultivation pond. In one cycle, he said, the saline tilapia farm in Karawang targets 80 to 100 tons per hectare.
Prabowo also spread some saline tilapia seeds in one of the ponds, together with Minister Trenggono and Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Didit Herdiawan.
After, the head of state inspected the nursery ponds, which is one of the earlier stages of the saline tilapia cultivation cycle. Prabowo also made time to greet local residents and the fish cultivators present around the cultivation site.
The Presidential Secretariat in its statement remarked that Prabowo’s visit to the tilapia ponds is part of the government’s move towards food self-sufficiency, economic equality, and poverty eradication through the optimization of the fisheries sector.
The 80-hectare Saline Tilapia Fish Cultivation Modeling was inaugurated by former Indonesian President Joko Widodo earlier this year on May 8. Developing the supporting infrastructure of the cultivation area cost Rp76 billion.
The saline tilapia cultivation site was once serving as a shrimp pond built by former President Soeharto in 1984, and halted in 1998, leaving it unattended for decades.
