TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia national football team coach, Shin Tae-yong, revealed the key to his team's victory over Saudi Arabia in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Garuda team won the match 2-0 on Tuesday night, November 19, 2024, at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.
"We implemented the tactics 100 percent because we trained for three days based on the analysis of the entire coaching staff," he said in a post-match press conference at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.
The coach known as STY explained that Saudi Arabia played in a 4-1-4-1 formation with a high press at the back. This strategy often left space behind the opposition. Therefore, STY instructed the players to penetrate behind the Saudi defensive line during the attack transition.
According to Shin Tae-yong, the players successfully implemented the strategy. "In fact, there were good chances in the beginning, we should have scored more goals than the final score. However, I would like to express my gratitude to the players and supporters," he said.
Indonesia's goal scorer Marselino Ferdinan echoed these sentiments. He also thanked the crowd at GBK and beyond. "We deserved to win this game, we did a good job. We learned from the game against Japan, we were able to handle all the pressure," he said.
Throughout the match, the supporters at GBK were also vocal in their support of the game. Cheers could be heard when the Saudi Arabian players tried to emotionally provoke the Garuda team, leading to on-field refereeing decisions that were deemed unfavorable to the Indonesian National Team.
After securing their first win, the Indonesian National Team climbed to third place in the preliminary standings of Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Garuda team now has six points, tied with Saudi Arabia in fourth place. Previously, the Garuda team was at the bottom of the standings with just three points.
In the first half, Marselino Ferdinan scored a goal with an assist from Ragnar Oratmangoen in the 32nd minute to give Garuda a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, the ball fell to Marselino again and he scored a second goal in the 57th minute to send the 55,000 fans in the stadium into raptures. It was the Oxford United player's second goal of the match which gave Indonesia a 2-0 lead.
