Over 1,000 scientists, with a significant contingent of psychologists and neurologists, have joined forces in issuing an open letter demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The letter also implores the international community to exert unwavering pressure on the Israeli regime to ensure strict adherence to international humanitarian law.
Renowned figures including Nobel laureates May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser from Norway, as well as Susumu Tonegawa from Japan, have lent their support to this initiative, as reported by the Iranian news agency, IRNA, citing numerous media outlets on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
As reported by Antara, several researchers from Spain, including Pablo Lanillos, a distinguished member of the Neuro Artificial Intelligence and Robotics group at the Cajal Institute, have also signed this urgent appeal.
“This call is powerful because it comes from neurologists – individuals who study how the human brain perceives and processes such conflicts,” emphasized Lanillos.
The letter also condemns the Israeli regime's perpetration of "countless war crimes" within the besieged Palestinian territories, issuing a warning that the cycle of violence will persist unabated without the imposition of decisive international pressure.
Through this collective plea, the scientists underscore the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict, highlighting how Gaza remains trapped in a vicious cycle of violence and retaliation, irrevocably undermining the prospects for peaceful coexistence. They assert that "hatred, death, and destruction" have become rampant.
The letter urges the international community to push the Israeli regime to immediately cease hostilities. The scientists propose concrete measures to achieve this objective, including the cessation of arms sales to Israel and a reevaluation of existing cooperation agreements with the regime.
The letter also acknowledges the human cost of Israel's current policies, which have inflicted immense suffering upon the Palestinian population while simultaneously endangering the lives of Israeli citizens.
This initiative was spearheaded and published by a group of researchers affiliated with Sorbonne University in France and Princeton University in the United States.
