TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least three people were killed and dozens more injured in a grenade attack at a festival in northern Thailand, local media reported on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
Two people died at the scene, while a third was pronounced dead at a hospital in Umphang, a district in Tak province bordering Myanmar, Anadolu reported.
A further 48 people were injured in the blast.
The blast occurred on Friday night when a hand grenade was thrown at a crowd of about 9,000 people watching the “Ramwong” folk dance at a Red Cross exhibition.
According to Al Jazeera, police said a Thai youth and a Myanmar youth belonging to the Karen National Union (KNU), a rebel group fighting for autonomy in neighboring Karen state, have been arrested.
Tak provincial police chief Major General Samrit Ekamol said the Myanmar suspect threw the bomb in revenge for clashes between rival groups during the Loy Krathong festival in November, the broadcaster reported.
The KNU denied the allegations. A senior KNU official, who declined to be named, denied involvement and said the group had no members in the Thai-Myanmar border area.
Tak province has a heavy military presence in its border areas, including Umphang.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged security agencies to investigate.
