TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok has responded to rumors that the Tokopedia app will close and merge with TikTok Shop, denying the news.

"We continue to invest in Tokopedia and Indonesia as part of our strategy to drive sustainable growth and innovation," a TikTok spokesperson told Tempo on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Previously, news of Tokopedia's planned closure has been widely discussed on social media.

In response to this issue, the National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) stated that it would continue to monitor developments and coordinate with relevant ministries and regulators to prevent any harmful consumer practices amid the transformation of the national digital trade ecosystem.

Currently, many Tokopedia users still have Tokopedia PLUS subscriptions, a premium service that offers unlimited free shipping, faster delivery, and exclusive discounts with a subscription fee of around Rp150-Rp300,000 for six months, or at a lower rate during certain promotional periods.

BPKN Chair Mufti Mubarok stated that any change in business models, mergers, or closures of digital platforms should not harm consumers, especially those who have prepaid for services. "Consumers should not stay silent. The country is present through BPKN to ensure that the rights of digital consumers remain protected," he said when contacted in Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as cited by Antara.

Tokopedia and TikTok merged after the government banned social commerce, a practice combining social media and e-commerce platforms like TikTok Shop. On December 10, 2023, coinciding with the National Online Shopping Day, TikTok and Tokopedia signed a stock acquisition agreement.

Tokopedia sold 75.01 percent of its shares, valued at US$840 million (equivalent to Rp13.69 trillion at an exchange rate of Rp16,294 per U.S. dollar), to the Chinese technology giant. Meanwhile, the remaining 24.99 percent of shares are owned by PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO).

In collaboration with Tokopedia, TikTok has committed to investing more than US$1.5 billion, or around Rp24.44 trillion, in stages. This plan is followed by the transfer of ownership and operational rights of TikTok Shop in Indonesia, worth US$340 million or equivalent to Rp5.64 trillion to Tokopedia.
