Alongside this responsibility come compensation packages that often reach astronomical figures. So, of all the giant companies across the United States (U.S.), who are among the highest-paid CEOs?
Citing Visual Capitalist, Forbes, and Investopedia, here are the top 10 highest-paid CEOs in the U.S., clocking annual earnings of up to US$150 million.
List of the Highest-Paid CEOs in the U.S.
The following data is based on Visual Capitalist’s list of the highest-earning S&P 500 CEOs in 2023, featuring Broadcom’s Hock Tan to Netflix’s David Zaslav.
1. Hock Tan, Broadcom (US$161.8 million)
At the top of the list is Hock Tan, with an annual compensation of nearly US$162 million in 2023. The Malaysian-born man is the CEO of Broadcom, a technology and software solutions company headquartered in San Jose, California.
Tan has been serving as the CEO, president, and director of Broadcom since March 2006. His latest activity includes joining the board of Meta in February 2024.
2. Nikesh Arora, Palo Alto Networks (US$151.4 million)
Dubbed “the world’s cybersecurity leader," Palo Alto Networks has emerged as a prominent player in providing next-gen cybersecurity. Nikesh Arora has assumed the role of the company’s CEO since 2018.
Prior to his tenure as Palo Alto Networks’ CEO, Arora accumulated experience in various executive roles at Softbank Group Corp. and Google. At Palo Alto Networks, he generated an impressive US$151.4 million in 2023.
3. Stephen Schwarzman, Blackstone Group (US$119.8 million)
Alongside Peter Peterson, Stephen Schwarzman founded Blackstone Group, a private equity firm, in 1985. The company is claimed to be the world’s largest alternative asset manager, possessing AUM worth over US$1 trillion.
Handling a business is not something new for Schwarzman. At the age of 14, he commenced his first business, providing lawnmowing services.
With outstanding pay packages of almost US$120 million at Blackstone Group, Schwarzman easily becomes one of the world’s wealthiest figures. According to Forbes, the magnate’s net worth currently stands at around US$55 billion.
4. Christopher Winfrey, Charter Communications (US$89.1 million)
As the name suggests, Charter Communications revolves around providing internet, mobile communications, TV, and more, ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the country. Christopher Winfrey leads the company for the time being.
As per Forbes, Winfrey joined Charter as a chief financial officer (CFO) in 2010. His main responsibilities include handling the company’s accounting, financial planning and analysis, and more.
Given his impressive performance, especially in the process of the Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks integration, Winfrey was then promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO) in 2021, and a year later, he served as Charter’s CEO until today, obtaining a total payment of US$89.1 million in 2023.
5. Will Lansing, Fair Isaac (US$66.4 million)
Coming in fifth place on our list of the highest-paid CEOs in the U.S. is Will Lansing. Obtaining degrees from Wesleyan and Georgetown University, Lansing’s current position is as the CEO of Fair Isaac and Company (FICO), pulling in over US$65 million worth of pay packages.
When it comes to executive roles, Lansing previously gained some experience at InfoSpace and ValueVision Media.
6. Tim Cook, Apple (US$63.2 million)
No list of the highest-paid CEOs is complete without Tim Cook. Aside from being the CEO of Apple, he is considered a minority shareholder, owning less than a 1 percent stake, which is equivalent to over 3 million shares of the tech giant.
As the executive officer of Apple, Cook raked in approximately US$63.2 million in 2023. This jaw-dropping figure was surprisingly lower than that of 2022, which was $99.4 million.
7. Hamid Moghadam, Prologis (US$50.9M)
Founded in 1991, Prologis operates in the real estate industry. Its trustworthy real estate investment services have brought the company to be featured in Forbes’ 2025 Most Trusted Companies in America.
Hamid Moghadam currently oversees the company as the CEO. His compensation packages stood at US$50.9 million in 2023.
8. Theodore Sarandos, Netflix (US$49.8M)
Theodore “Ted” Sarandos was named the CEO of streaming giant, Netflix, in 2020. During his tenure as the executive officer, he was instrumental in steering the company to generate a substantial financial outcome, with profits reaching approximately US$9.37 billion in the first quarter of 2024, as per Business Insider.
In terms of total payment, Sarandos received a good amount of US$49.8 million in 2023.
9. David Zaslav, Warner Bros. Discovery (US$49.7 million)
For the time being, the CEO and President of Warner Bros. Discovery is David Zaslav. The New Yorker was pivotal in the transaction between AT&T’s WarnerMedia and Discovery, combining the companies’ media assets in April 2022.
Data from Visual Capitalist showed that his compensation packages were worth US$49.7 million, coming in close behind that of Ted Sarandos.
10. Glenn Fogel, Booking Holdings (US$46.7 million)
Rounding out our list of the highest-paid CEOs in the U.S. is Glenn Fogel, the CEO of Booking Holdings. The latter provides online travel and related solutions, assisting customers in booking reservations in various accommodations, including hotels, hostels, apartments, and others.
As the CEO, Glenn Fogel earned US$46.7 million in 2023.
