TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President-elect Donald Trump on Monday offered the position of U.S. ambassador to the UN to Elise Stefanik, a Republican Party politician from New York. The pro-Israel figure, who lacks diplomatic experience, is reported to have accepted the offer, as confirmed by a senior source close to the presidential transition to CBS News.
The New York Post first reported the offer, with statements from Trump and Stefanik. CNN also reported the news, citing two sources.
"I am honored to nominate Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as the US Ambassador to the UN. Elise is a very strong, tough, and smart America First advocate," Trump said in a statement to CBS News.
Stefanik confirmed her acceptance of the role in a statement to Post.
"I am truly honored to receive President Trump's nomination to serve in his cabinet as the U.S. ambassador to the UN," said Stefanik.
"During my conversation with President Trump, I expressed how humbled I am to receive his nomination and hope to receive support from my colleagues in the US Senate,"
The position requires Senate confirmation.
Stefanik, a vocal and loyal ally of Trump and a U.S. House member of the Republican Party ranking number 4 who serves as the Republican Conference chair in the House, will take over the role held by Nikki Haley during the first Trump administration.
Stefanik was among the most vehement questioners of three university chancellors who testified before the House Education and Labor Committee last December on how they handled incidents claimed to be antisemitic on their campuses following the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel.
Many Republican lawmakers insisted that the president did not do much to quell pro-Palestine protests.
Claudine Gay of Harvard University, Liz Magill of the University of Pennsylvania, and Sally Kornbluth of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology appeared before the panel. The chancellors said they did not underestimate antisemitism but also valued freedom of speech. Eventually, Gay and Magill resigned.
Stefanik repeatedly emphasized during the hearing that the slogans "from the river to the sea" and "globalization intifada" are tantamount to calls for genocide. In fact, Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza for the past year, with at least 43,600 Palestinian casualties, the majority of whom are women and children.
Since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in October 2023, Stefanik has supported legislation targeting pro-Palestinian student camps established last spring as a protest against the war.
After the Senate confirms her nomination, she will succeed U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who has held the position during the Biden administration.
Over the past year, Thomas-Greenfield has vetoed several UN efforts calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, as the U.S. becomes increasingly isolated internationally due to its strong support for Israel and its war efforts.
