TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel on Friday, January 3, 2025, insisted on the grounds that the search of a hospital in northern Gaza was a form of defense. However, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk called the justification baseless. WHO even urged Israel to immediately release the Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Abu Safiya, from detention.
Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Daniel Meron, uploaded to social media a letter he sent on Friday, January 3, 2025, to WHO and Turk. The letter stated that Israel conducted a search of Kamal Adwan Hospital because it was triggered by allegations that members of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group had used the hospital. Tel Aviv assured that it would take the necessary steps to protect civilian lives while cooperating with credible intelligence.
Meanwhile, Turk said before the UN Security Council on Friday, January 3, 2025, that Israel could not prove its claims, which were often unclear and broad. In some cases, Israel's claims even seemed to contradict publicly available information.
“I call for an independent, thorough and transparent investigation into all Israeli attacks on hospitals, health infrastructure and health workers and allegations of abuse of health facilities,” Turk told delegates from the 15-member UN Security Council.
Israel’s Deputy Ambassador to the UN Jonathan Miller said that of the more than 240 Palestinians currently detained in Tel Aviv, about 15 were suspected of having been involved in the October 7, 2023 attacks. He confirmed that Abu Safiya was also detained.
The WHO is currently concerned about Abu Safiya’s fate. WHO delegate Richard Peeperkorn to the UN said that his office had lost contact with Abu Safiya and called for her release. Responding to these concerns, US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea said that her office was gathering information about Abu Safiya.
Palestinian envoy to the UN, Riyad Mansour, wept as he remembered the words of Mahmoud Abu Nujaila, a doctor from Médecins Sans Frontières, who wrote on a blackboard at Al Awda Hospital before he was killed in an Israeli raid in November 2023, about the steps to take when performing surgery. “Whoever survives until the end must be able to carry out the task of treating patients. We have done what we can. Remember us,” Nujaila wrote before he died.
