Yogyakarta Still in Trash Crisis, Environment Minister Urges Local Govt to Seriously Handle It

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Trash crisis that has not been resolved in the city of Yogyakarta, known as the Tourism and Student City, also caught the attention of the Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq. Hanif inspected the waste management in the Temporary Waste Disposal Site (TPS) of Yogyakarta City and Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta on Monday, November 18, 2024.

Hanif revealed that the prolonged waste handling issue has serious environmental pollution implications if not addressed immediately. He highlighted the hundreds of tons of uncollected waste and the disposal mechanisms.

"(Unresolved waste management) has environmental impacts," said Hanif while inspecting the pile of uncollected waste at Mandala Krida TPS in Yogyakarta City.

Piyungan TPST Closed

It is worth noting that the trash crisis in Yogyakarta occurred after the permanent closure of the Piyungan Integrated Waste Management Facility (TPST) which has been the central waste disposal location for Yogyakarta City, Sleman Regency, and Bantul. The closure of Piyungan TPST since May 2024 was due to the location being overloaded with waste.

Hanif urged the local government not to let this issue drag on. In the near future, he will summon and coordinate with the Yogyakarta City Government.

"Someone must be held accountable for this situation," he said.

Hanif stated that if there are violations in waste management, he will not hesitate to take legal action, in accordance with Law Number 18 of 2008.

"Local governments, whether at the city/regency or provincial level, must promptly find concrete solutions to address this issue," he said.

Budget Policy

Hanif explained that waste management in Yogyakarta requires adequate budget policies. This should be a priority.

"With a budget of only Rp100 billion, it is clearly not enough to handle waste in this city because when the management at the source is not in order, waste will continue to accumulate," he said.

The Ministry also stated that they will deploy investigators and environmental supervisors to investigate the waste issue. The ministry is also prepared to take legal action against those proven to be negligent.

"So that the public can feel a sense of justice," said Hanif.

Inadequate Land

Yogyakarta Acting Mayor Sugeng Purwanto stated that he is ready if the Ministry of Environment requests clarification on the ongoing trash crisis in his area.

"We have made efforts to handle this waste, but the problem is that Yogyakarta City indeed does not have adequate land for waste management," said Sugeng.

According to Sugeng, the situation in Yogyakarta City differs greatly from the districts in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The districts still have extensive land for waste processing.

To address the waste issue, Yogyakarta City currently has 4 TPSTs and has borrowed land in the Piyungan area of Bantul for waste processing. The Yogyakarta City Government has also established waste processing partnerships with other regions, but there are no takers yet.
