TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that he has ordered an increase in funding to equip his country's brigades with new unmanned aerial vehicles or drones.
Zelensky, speaking in his evening video address, mentioned that he received a report from Pavlo Palisa, a former military commander and newly appointed deputy chief of staff to the president, to provide additional funding for drones.
"We recently approved the decision on that direct amount of funding. However, now I see that the amount is not sufficient," Zelensky said, Monday, December 9, 2024, as quoted from Reuters.
"I have instructed the prime minister to increase funding for the brigades in the coming days, to increase it several times over."
Zelensky declared a focus on the deployment of drones in the war, which has been ongoing for 33 months since Russia invaded in February 2022.
Back in October, he mentioned that Ukraine had a contract to produce 1.5 million drones this year and is capable of increasing production to four million per year.
Drone production was nearly non-existent in Ukraine before Russia's invasion in February 2022.
Earlier, Russia attacked the southeastern regions of Ukraine last Friday. According to local officials, the attack targeted two cities, Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih, killing at least 12 people and injuring over 40.
Reported by Reuters, the attack on a car workshop in Zaporizhzhia turned the location into a giant fireball explosion. The region's governor stated that the attack killed 10 people.
According to local media reports, a local official mentioned that 24 people were injured, including two children. Additionally, several settlements faced power supply issues after the attack.
In Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky's hometown, a missile attack on the administration building killed two individuals. Authorized emergency services recorded at least 19 other injuries, including a child. Moreover, residential homes were reported to be damaged.
Russia stated that there is no basis for negotiations regarding efforts to end the Ukrainian war. This statement came in response to the increasing calls for peace talks since Donald Trump won the American presidential election in November.
"There is no basis for negotiations," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the Izvestia newspaper, Wednesday, December 4, 2024, as reported by Reuters.
Peskov emphasized that many countries have expressed readiness to mediate the Ukrainian war and Moscow appreciates all countries for their good intentions, including Qatar.
