TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian national football team coach, Shin Tae-yong, said that he is preparing the Garuda squad for the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup, despite losing to Vietnam with a 0-1 score on Sunday, December 15.
“I’m gearing up for the semifinals, and I believe we can qualify for the next round. We will advance to the next round,” said the coach in the press conference after the Vietnam game, as quoted from PSSI.
The South Korean tactician admitted that it was still difficult to transfer game tactics and strategies to young players, given the limited time. According to him, young players need more time to develop.
“We don't have enough time to train or do training camps. So, it's difficult for me to incorporate some crucial tactics and other things,” he said, adding that it was a bit shameful.
He realized that the ten Southeast Asian teams competing in the 2024 AFF Cup also exercised maximum preparations with similar limitations to the Garuda team. "Especially countries without direct flights like Laos, Myanmar, or Cambodia,” he said.
The Indonesian national team suffered its first defeat in the Group B preliminaries of the 2024 AFF Cup during their away match with Vietnam on Sunday. The Garuda team dropped to second place with four points from three matches.
Vietnam moved to the top of Group B with six points from two matches, having beaten Indonesia 1-0 following a 4-1 win to Laos in the opening match.
The Philippines are third with two points from two matches, bearing a significant threat to Indonesia’s standing. If the Azkals come out on top during their home match against Vietnam, they will replace Indonesia’s position before their match next Saturday.
The Philippines and Indonesia will meet at Manahan Stadium in Solo on Saturday, December 21, 2024. The game will determine which team will qualify for the semifinals of the 2024 AFF Cup.
