TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several Arab leaders are reportedly concerned about potential instability in their regions following the fall of Bashar al-Assad from power in Syria, according to an analysis by The Washington Post of experts, officials and diplomats.
The leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are said to be wary of the potential political fallout that could trigger unrest in their respective countries following Assad’s fall.
A diplomat told the newspaper that the presence and expansion of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group in Syria poses a particular threat to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi.
The report noted that Arab states are cautiously monitoring developments in Syria, trying to understand their implications and find ways to contain potential instability following Assad’s departure.
Syrian armed opposition groups took control of the capital Damascus on December 8. Following the incident, Russian officials said that Assad had stepped down after negotiations with the parties involved in the Syrian conflict. Assad later left Syria for Russia, where he was granted political asylum.
Mohammed al-Bashir, who previously led an Idlib-based government formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was appointed interim prime minister on December 10, 2024.
