TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Egypt announced on Sunday that Cairo will host an emergency Arab summit on February 27, 2025. This is to discuss the latest serious developments concerning Palestinian territories and the Gaza Strip, as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt in a statement cited by Channel NewsAsia.
The summit was made after high-level consultations between Egypt and Arab countries, including Palestine, which requested the summit. This plan was realized through joint coordination with Bahrain, which is the chair of the Arab League and the current secretariat of the Arab League, according to the statement.
The announcement comes following the controversial statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting the relocation of Palestinian residents from Gaza to neighboring countries, including Egypt and Jordan.
The proposal has been widely rejected regionally and internationally.
On Friday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke with regional partners including Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to support opposition to any forced displacement of Palestinians from their land. Arab countries insist on a two-state solution with an independent Palestine alongside Israel.
In a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Tuesday, Trump stated that the U.S. envisions rebuilding Gaza after resetting Palestinians.
Trump previously made a similar proposal, explicitly rejected by Egypt and Jordan, reaffirming their rejection of any attempt to forcibly transfer Palestinians.
