TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights (HAM), Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra emphasized that the Indonesian government will continue to monitor the progress of the five inmates who are members of the Bali Nine after being transferred to Australia through the Indonesian Embassy in that country.

"Australia will inform the development of their citizens' prisoners to us and open access for our Indonesian Embassy in Australia to monitor the prisoners' progress," said Yusril when contacted in Jakarta on Sunday, December 15, 2024, as quoted from Antara.

Yusril said the Australian government has agreed to all the conditions proposed by Indonesia for the transfer of the five inmates. Yusril and Australia's Minister of Home Affairs Tony Burke signed the practical arrangement on Thursday, December 12, 2024. "The transfer was conducted on December 15. All has been agreed," he stated.

Bali Nine is the nickname for nine Australians who were arrested in Bali due to being involved in a drug syndicate case in 2005. They were proven to smuggle 8.2 kilograms of heroin. The nine inmates are Andrew Chan, Myuran Sukumaran, Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Renae Lawrence, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, and Martin Stephens.

Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were executed in 2015, while Renae was sentenced to 20 years in prison and released in 2018 after receiving several remissions. Meanwhile, Tan Duc died in custody while serving a life sentence in 2018.

Currently, five Bali Nine inmates remain serving life sentences. They are Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, and Martin Stephens. The five have been transferred to their home country, Australia, on Sunday morning. They are Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush, and Martin Stephens.

They were handed over to the Australian government at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali. The Australian party departed from Ngurah Rai Airport at 10:35 WITA (Central Indonesian Time) and landed in Darwin, Australia, at 13:12 WITA or around 14:42 local time.

Yusril stated that the five inmates were transferred with the status remaining as prisoners. The Indonesian government, Yusril said, did not grant clemency to the five prisoners, as one of the conditions agreed upon by the two countries.

The practical arrangement also stated that the Australian government respects Indonesia's sovereignty and court decisions. The five relocated Bali Nine inmates are subsequently included in the barred list, according to Indonesian law. "All of them are barred from entering Indonesia for life," said Yusril.
