TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Deputy Chairperson of House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VII, Chusnunia Chalim, responded to Bali topping travel guide giant Fodor’s ‘No List’ which discourages travelers of visiting the island. Bali is included in the list alongside other cities such as Barcelona, Venice, and Tokyo.
Chusnunia said all stakeholders involved in the decision-making process shall take the positive aspects of the coverage. Despite facing criticism, she said it is undeniable that Bali is still receiving appreciation from various parts of the world.
"We don’t have to be too reactive to Fodor’s inclusion. It serves as evaluation material, but we must focus on the positive side,” she said in a written statement on Monday, November 25, 2024.
Prior to Fodor’s publication, Chusnunia mentioned that Bali had already received plenty of feedback on room for improvement, such as reclamation, spatial planning policies, building permits, and others. These feedbacks, she said, are noted and used as evaluation material.
Chusnunia, however, emphasized that Bali continues to receive accolades on the global stage. She referred to the Jatiluwih Village in Tabanan Regency, which was included by the U.N. World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) as one of the best tourism villages in the world.
Amidst the various feedback and criticisms, Chusnunia urged policymakers and communities to work hand-in-hand to address the shortcomings in Bali.
By doing so, she said, Bali could become a global tourism reference point. "Not only contributing to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but Bali also becomes a city that is friendly and comfortable for all its residents," Chusnunia stated.
