TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roy Soemirat, confirmed that Indonesia has not yet formally recognized the new government in Syria, which is now reportedly under the control of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group following the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad. He said the transition of power in Syria is still an ongoing process.
“We must observe how the international community and all Syrian stakeholders respond to the current political dynamics,” stated Roy during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 16, 2024.
Roy emphasized that Indonesia will continue to actively engage in discussions on Syrian issues within international forums, including the United Nations. The Indonesian government will not rush to recognize the new government.
“Because for the international community, what’s important is not about the matter, but rather how Syria can return to normal. All Syrian people and stakeholders must agree on the next steps as a country,” he explained
Roy mentioned that the implementation of all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions is crucial for resolving the conflict in Syria. “The obligations outlined in these UNSC resolutions cannot be underestimated. We must monitor their implementation moving forward,” he added.
Al Jazeera reported on Sunday, December 8, 2024, that opposition forces had declared Syria free from the rule of Bashar al-Assad following a successful offensive. President Assad was reportedly forced to flee Damascus and seek refuge in Russia.
The collapse of the Assad regime, which had ruled Syria for more than 53 years, marks a significant turning point after nearly 14 years of civil war. The conflict began in 2011 with peaceful protests against the Assad government, which subsequently responded with violence, ultimately escalating into a full-scale civil war.
