TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian men's doubles pair, Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Rian Ardianto (Fajar / Rian), were stopped in the semifinals of the 2024 BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, Saturday, December 14, 2024
Fajar / Rian had to admit the superiority of the Malaysian pair Goh Sze Fei / Nur Izzuddin in the last four matches through a tight rubber game with a score of 21-17, 16-21, 25-27.
"The match was very exciting, especially in the deciding game, unfortunately the result was not what we all wanted but we fought hard," said Fajar, quoted from a written statement from PBSI.
"We continued to excel in the third game but we couldn't convert it into a win," he added.
The defending All England Open champion admitted that his opponent was able to catch up when under pressure.
"It must be admitted, when the setting match the opponent was more confident, more sure. Even though they were always behind, they didn't let their guard down and were always able to equalize the points. When they turned around, they actually managed to get the winning point," said Rian.
Although they have not been able to advance to the final, Fajar/Rian are still grateful to have been able to put up maximum resistance in the last four today. Moreover, Fajar had just suffered an ankle injury during the second group phase match, two days ago.
"I want to thank the support team, physiotherapists and massage team who have treated me for the past two days. Trying to get me to play today after suffering an ankle injury, this is beyond my expectations and finally being able to compete," said Fajar.
"Apart from that, I really want to try while I still can. Alhamdulillah (Praise to God), it went smoothly," he added.
Reflecting on their career journey in 2024, the world's fourth-ranked men's doubles are grateful for all the dynamics that have occurred throughout the season.
"2024 was not our best year but we are grateful to be able to return to the semifinals of the World Tour Finals, to be able to win two titles throughout the year, the All England and the Kumamoto Japan Masters. We were also ranked fourth in the world at the end of the year," said Fajar.
"Hopefully next year we can be more consistent, better and free from injury," he added.
