TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) presented the Nurtanio Award to an aerodynamics professor from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Lavi Rizki Zuhal.

BRIN Head, Laksana Tri Handoko, said the Nurtanio Award is given to Indonesian figures, scientists, or experts who have provided much inspiration and ideas in the development of science and technology, both nationally and internationally, in the field of aviation and space.

"In addition, it also aims to realize superior human resources in Indonesia who are able to master, develop, and disseminate science and technology in the field of aviation and space for the welfare of the Indonesian nation," said Handoko in his written statement on Monday, November 25, 2024.

Lavi's research interest lies at the intersection of fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, and computational science, with specific applications in aerospace engineering. BRIN considers Lavi to have contributed by producing a new generation of researchers and engineers in the aerospace engineering field.

Currently, according to Handoko, Lavi is a lecturer in the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD) at ITB. He also serves as the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs in FTMD ITB. Previously, Lavi served as the Chair of the Fluid Dynamics and Propulsion Expertise Group in FTMD ITB. He also once served as the Chair of the Aerospace Engineering Undergraduate Program at ITB.

Quoting from the official site itb.ac.id, Lavi obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, USA, in 1996. He earned his master's degree from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, USA, in 1997. Then he obtained his doctorate degree in 2001 at the same campus while pursuing his master's degree.

His patented Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) include 'Low Torque Radiator Fan' in 2018. Additionally, 'Method for Identifying Objects Using Color Segmentation and Cross-correlation' in 2007.

His three latest scientific articles that have been published are 'Multi-objective design space exploration using explainable surrogate models' in 2024, 'Direct numerical simulation of 45 oblique flow past surface-mounted square cylinder' in 2024, and 'Total Lagrangian smoothed particle hydrodynamics with an improved bond-based deformation gradient for large strain solid dynamics' in 2024.

The Nurtanio Award was inspired by Air Marshal Nurtanio Pringgoadisuryo, who was a pioneer in the Indonesian aerospace industry. The senior officer of the Indonesian Air Force was also the creator of Indonesia's first all-metal and fighter aircraft named Sikumbang, and created other aircraft named Kunang-kunang, Belalang, and Gelatik.
