TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) strongly condemns the excessive use of force in the shooting incident by the Malaysian maritime authority, the Malaysian Maritime Strengthening Agency (APMM), against five Indonesian migrant workers (PMI). The shooting incident resulted in one fatality and several injuries.

"The Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers urges the Malaysian government to immediately investigate this incident and take firm action against APMM patrol officers if they are proven to have committed acts involving excessive use of force," said Deputy Minister of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers Christina Aryani in a press conference in response to the incident.

Previously, the non-procedural shooting incident of five PMI by APMM occurred on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 03:00 in the morning Malaysian time. The shooting incident resulted in one migrant worker dying, another in critical condition, and three people being treated in several hospitals in Selangor, Malaysia.

In this regard, KP2MI strongly condemns the alleged excessive use of force by APMM and emphasizes its commitment to continue coordinating to ensure that injured victims receive medical treatment. In addition, KP2MI also provides support to the families of the victims, including legal assistance and repatriation of bodies.

"Currently, KemenP2MI is tracing the origin of the victims so that assistance can be carried out optimally," explained Wamen Christina.

The Ministry of P2MI has coordinated with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Police Attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to encourage consular access to visit the victims being treated. Furthermore, Wamen Christina also stated that she would encourage a meeting with the Malaysian government to discuss preventive measures so that similar incidents do not happen again.

The meeting will also discuss the mechanism for handling non-procedural PMI in a humane manner according to human rights (HAM) standards. Through the press conference, Wamen Christina also emphasized that the state will continue to be present to protect, pay attention to, and ensure the enforcement of human rights for Indonesian migrant workers.
