Luhut Pandjaitan, Garuda Indonesia Meet Boeing to Discuss Lower Airfare

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The chair of the National Economic Council, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, said he had met with Boeing and Garuda Indonesia to push for lower airfare.

One of the options to ensure lower prices, he said, is for airlines, such as Garuda Indonesia, to use Boeing's software to minimize aircraft operational costs.

"Boeing proposed using their software for optimal use to reduce costs,” Luhut told the media crew in Jakarta on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

Luhut said Boeing’s new software will enhance the national aircraft's utility, which has been found lacking in Garuda Indonesia Airlines.

This strategy is expected to attract more passengers, in addition to lower airfare. Luhut emphasized the necessity of effectiveness in aircraft utilization, which has been considered suboptimal, especially in Garuda Indonesia Airlines.

"I have talked to Garuda's CEO," he said.

The Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, said the government will lower domestic airfare for the 2025 Christmas and New Year holidays. The prices can be lowered as much as 10 percent, the coordinating minister said.

"Lowering the ticket prices is important to help our people and boost the economy, including tourism," he said on November 26 after meeting President Prabowo.

Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwaghandi said the ticket price reduction would apply to 19 main airports, including the Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport.

Previously, on Friday, November 22, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno led a ministerial-level meeting in preparation for the 2024 Christmas and New Year holidays.

He said the holiday homecoming peak will occur on December 24, while the return flow is expected to peak on January 2, 2025.

Citing Antara, the Ministry of Transportation previously estimated the number of passengers during the Christmas and New Year holidays to reach 3,912,224 passengers (3,048,148 domestic and 864,076 international), 4 percent higher than the previous holiday.
