TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A monkey causing disturbance at the main electricity network substation in Sri Lanka led to a major electricity outage on Sunday, February 9, 2025, a government official said. The nationwide blackout started around 11:30 local time as reported by Channel NewsAsia.

"A monkey had come into contact with the transformers at our grid station, which caused a short-circuit in the system," Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told reporters.

The intrusion took place on the outskirts of the southern city of Colombo, he said.

The electricity was eventually fully restored across the country by around 06:00 PM local time, according to a reporter from the Sri Lanka Daily Mirror news outlet. The power outage also consequently caused disruption to the water supply.

Previously, the people of Sri Lanka had to endure power cuts for months around the summer of 2022 when the country was plunged into an economic crisis.

Fuel pumps ran out of petrol and diesel, forcing thermal power plants to ration electricity for up to 13 hours a day.
