TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -- Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian said that the displaced residents of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki’s eruptions in East Flores can still cast their votes in the 2024 regional election.

Tito said that, in coordination with the local General Election Commission (KPU), special polling stations will be designated at several shelter locations. “There will be 22 special polling stations set up at the evacuation sites in East Flores,” said Tito at the Ministry of Home Affairs office in Jakarta on Monday, November 25, 2024.

Tito said the refugee management coordination between the central and regional governments is also running smoothly. Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto and Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno have directly visited the evacuation sites.

Mount Lewotobi’s volcanic activities have been ramping up since Sunday, November 3, 2024. The volcano erupted the next day, raising its volcanic alert to Level IV on the same day.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted several times in the following days, with the latest on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at around 9:56 a.m. local time.

Official information released by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) on Sunday, November 24, as reported by Antara, observed that the eruption column reached a height of about 1,000 meters above the crater, or approximately 2,584 meters above sea level.

PVMBG advised residents living around Mount Lewotobi, as well as visiting tourists, to refrain from conducting activities within a 7-kilometer radius of the eruption point.

Residents are also advised to avoid the southwest to northwest direction of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki within an 8-kilometer radius. Those residing near the mountain are also urged to be wary of mudflow potential after rainfall, especially in rivers originating from the mountain peak.

Up to Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time, the eruptions have displaced a total of 13,240 individuals.

As many as 5,607 people have been sheltered at six established evacuation centers, while 7,363 evacuated independently at family or relatives' homes. Since the initial eruption on November 4, 2024, nine people have tragically lost their lives due to the disaster.
