TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will attend the D-8 Summit (Organization for Economic Cooperation) in Cairo, Egypt, from December 17-19, 2024, confirmed a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) Roy Soemirat. A key objective of this summit is the official handover of the D-8 chairmanship from Egypt to Indonesia, with Indonesia assuming the role for the 2026-2027 period, effective January 1, 2026.
“This D-8 Summit holds significant importance as it not only serves as a regular meeting of the D-8 organization but also marks the transition of the chairmanship from Egypt to Indonesia,” Roy said during a press conference at the Ministry's office in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 16, 2024.
Roy explained that the D-8, an organization comprised of eight developing countries, was founded in 1997 and includes Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkiye.
“We believe that cooperation within the D-8 framework is increasingly crucial as countries from the global south strive to strengthen their economic collaboration on the global stage,” Roy emphasized.
President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka were inaugurated on October 20, 2024. The General Elections Commission (KPU) announced that the Prabowo-Gibran ticket secured a decisive victory, garnering nearly 60% of the popular vote.
During the D-8 Summit, Prabowo is expected to actively contribute to the summit themed "Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises, Shaping Tomorrow's Economy". This aligns with the President's priorities for international cooperation, particularly in the field of economic development. Furthermore, the summit agenda will also include discussions on humanitarian issues in Palestine.
