TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Team Coach, Shin Tae-yong, has acknowledged that his players are experiencing fatigue ahead of their match against Laos in the 2024 AFF Cup. The two teams are set to face off at the Manahan Stadium in Solo, Central Java, on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 8 p.m. local time.
“This is our first home match in the 2024 AFF Cup. Yesterday, we secured a 1-0 victory in Myanmar, but the players are now quite exhausted,” Shin Tae-yong said during a press conference held at the Manahan Stadium in Solo on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
Indonesia's victory over Myanmar on Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon was hard-fought, with a solitary goal from Asnawi Mangkualam. The team's immediate return to Indonesia, arriving in Solo City only on Tuesday night, December 10, 2024, limited the players' recovery time.
However, Shin Tae-Yong emphasized that the team will strive to restore the players' physical condition. He expressed his desire to see Dony Tri Pamungkas and his teammates perform at their best against Laos. Although training time has been limited to a single day, he remains optimistic that the young players, with an average age below 22 years, will be able to adapt effectively. “Our players are, on average, 20 years old, not older,” he remarked.
The South Korean national also appealed for support from the Indonesian fans for these young players, emphasizing the importance of fostering their growth and development. He assured the public that he would adapt his strategies to maximize the strengths of the available players, including utilizing versatile players who can effectively fill multiple positions within the team. “Sometimes, unconventional tactics are necessary,” he said.
He cited the example of deploying Dony Tri Pamungkas in the role of both center-back and left-back, a tactical adjustment needed by a shortage of players in the center-back position. Shin Tae-yong said he would not rotate players in the match against Laos. “There are not many players who can be replaced. We will strive to give our utmost effort in every match.”
