TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of inmates at Class IIA Salemba Penitentiary participated in the democratic event of the Jakarta Regional Head Election 2024. According to Tempo's observation, several inmates of Salemba Prison wearing dark blue shirts with the words 'We believe we can change' formed a line in front of the polling place. At 08.37 WIB, a line was seen forming in front of polling stations 905, 906, and 907.
According to the Head of Class IIA Salemba Penitentiary, Beni Hidayat, the number of eligible voters in the prison reaches thousands. "1,258 people from DKI Jakarta" said Beni when met on the field of the Penitentiary on Wednesday, November 26, 2024. Beni explained that the number is a combination of permanent voter list (DPT) and additional voter list (DPTB) holders with DKI Jakarta identity cards.
"We ensure from that number to participate in the Regional Elections today," said Beni about the enthusiasm of inmates in the Jakarta Regional Elections. Inmates at Salemba Penitentiary are all male. They lined up orderly while waiting for the Polling Station Committee officials to call out their names one by one.
After handing the invitation letter to the Polling Station Committee official, inmates received a ballot paper with 3 choices of governor and deputy governor candidate pairs. Then, they took turns entering the voting booth and putting the ballot paper into the ballot box. One by one, inmates left the polling stations after dipping their pinky finger into blue ink.
At 09.12, Jakarta Central Metro Police Chief, Commissioner General Susatyo P. Condro surveyed the location of Salemba Prison Polling Stations. At the same time, the line of voters had started to decrease. An hour later, no more inmates were seen coming to the polling stations. According to the polling station supervisor, penitentiary officials were checking voter data to find out how many inmates had not exercised their voting rights.
The Head of the Penitentiary, Beni Hidayat, conveyed that after the voting, a vote count would be carried out. "Then all citizens or inmates, in particular, can exercise their voting rights according to their conscience," said Beni expressing hopes for the 2024 Regional Elections.
