TEMPO.CO, JakartaFIFA has concluded the second phase of its mission to assess and improve football stadium safety in Indonesia on Sunday, December 15, 2024. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), aims to enhance stadium safety and security standards across the country, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable football experience for all following the Kanjuruhan tragedy on October 1, 2022.

“This collaboration is our commitment to improving the quality and safety of football stadiums throughout Indonesia,” said PSSI Chair Erick Thohir, as quoted on the official PSSI website on Thursday, December 19, 2024.

“With FIFA's support, we strive to ensure that our stadiums meet international standards, providing a secure environment for players, officials, and fans. This is a crucial step towards building a better and safer football environment in Indonesia,” he explained.

Following the tragic events at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in 2022, PSSI and FIFA have been working to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The first phase of the stadium assessment program, conducted in May 2024, focused on eight stadiums. The second phase expanded the scope to include 21 stadiums across 12 provinces, including the BJ Habibie Stadium, Gelora Ratu Pamelingan Stadium, and Surajaya Stadium.

This initiative involves various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Public Works, clubs from League 1 and League 2, contractors, and local governments. The FIFA team, comprising stadium security and safety experts Ben Veenbrink and Lavin Vignesh from the FIFA Lead Regional Office, conducted the inspections. They were accompanied by PSSI representatives, including Adi Nugroho (Director of Infrastructure Security and Safety) and Cut Ayu Rahimainita (PSSI International Relations - FIFA Indonesia Office).

The objective of these inspections is to gather data and provide detailed recommendations for improving stadium security and safety. This includes developing comprehensive safety guidelines tailored to the specific needs and conditions within Indonesia, establishing a robust stadium certification and licensing system that meets international standards, and honoring the memory of the victims of the Kanjuruhan tragedy through improvements in stadium safety.
