TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rumors of pre-order availability for the iPhone 16 in Indonesia have circulated online, with some sources suggesting that pre-orders could begin as early as tomorrow, December 20, 2024. However, the Ministry of Industry has denied these claims.
Febri Hendri Antoni Arif, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry, emphasized that the iPhone 16 remains prohibited for sale in the Indonesian market because Apple has yet to fulfill the requirements requested by the government, including the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) certification and investment commitments to build a factory in Indonesia.
“The TKDN certification for iPhone 16 still needs a long time until Apple fulfills the remaining investment debt issue for the 2020-2023 period,” Febri told Tempo via a short message application on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
He urged the public to exercise caution regarding any pre-order offers for the iPhone 16, as no distribution permits have been issued by the government for this device. “The Ministry of Industry advises the public to be wary of any pre-order offers for the iPhone 16 from any source,” Febri cautioned.
He emphasized that the Ministry of Industry has been actively engaging with Apple to address the outstanding issues. “We have extended an invitation to Apple to visit Indonesia and discuss the TKDN requirements and investment commitments. But we have yet to receive a response,” Febri explained.
Previously, Secretary General of the Ministry of Industry, Eko Cahyanto, highlighted the key reasons behind the government's current stance. He emphasized that Apple has not fulfilled the investment value required by the government and that the iPhone 16 does not currently meet the TKDN regulations, which mandate domestic production activities.
