TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir responded to the two-level drop in the ranking of the Indonesian national team in FIFA. The decline was seen in the latest data from the world soccer body, Thursday, December 20, 2024.
Indonesia is now ranked 127th in the FIFA ranking with 1133.41 points. This position slipped two levels from the previous data on November 28, where the Garuda team was ranked 125th with 1135.11 points.
"It's okay," Erick said when met by the media crew in Jakarta on Thursday.
This ranking decline cannot be separated from Indonesia's two negative results in the last two ASEAN Cup 2024 matches against Laos and Vietnam. Indonesia did not win the two matches after a 3-3 draw against Laos and a 0-1 defeat against Vietnam.
These two bad results have reduced Indonesia's points by 1.7 points, and must be willing to close the year 2024 in the 127th position in the world. Indonesia's position was shifted by The Gambia in 125th with 1134.69 points and India in 126th with 1133.62 points.
Commenting on the matter, Erick said he had predicted a potential decline in the Garuda team's ranking because they fielded most U-22 players at this year's ASEAN Cup.
On the other hand, other countries are still fielding their senior players in this Southeast Asian level tournament.
"It has indeed been predicted when we field a young team at AFF, make sure there is a calculation yesterday against Myanmar we want to win, (the result) won. Against Laos, we want to win, (the result) is a draw," he explained.
"Against Vietnam, we predicted defeat yesterday. No,w this last one against the national team for the Philippines must win. So if the target is to reduce the ranking, we have predicted it because our team wants to fight senior teams from many countries," he added.
Meanwhile, Argentina, France, Spain, England, and Brazil still occupy the top five world rankings. From Asia, Japan is still the highest country in 15th place with 1652.79 points, while from Southeast Asia, Thailand still leads in 97th place in the world with 1231.17 points.
